Skiing White Pass without the crowds (which is to say, skiing White Pass)
By the front desk

White Pass is the ski area that big-resort people discover by accident and then stop telling their friends about. Twenty minutes up the byway from the lodge: honest snow, runs you don't have to queue for, and a parking lot where you can still see your car from the lift.
When to go
Midweek is the move — Tuesday and Wednesday mornings feel like a private mountain, and the locals would rather you didn't put that in writing. Weekends are still gentle by Crystal or Snoqualmie standards, but if you're sleeping here anyway, ski the quiet days and save the weekend for Rainier.
Rentals, lessons, lunch
Rentals and lessons live at the base area — book ahead for holiday weeks, walk up otherwise. The nordic center across the highway grooms a serious network if skinny skis are your thing.
Our checkout-to-chairlift record is 31 minutes. Get the coffee going first; the mountain doesn't open till nine anyway.
Front desk notes
Chains or traction tires are often required on the pass after the first real snow — check conditions before you drive up, or ask the desk for the morning report.
