Five trails under two hours from the front desk

By the front desk

An old-growth trail through mossy firs and cedars

Not every day needs a summit. These five stay under two hours car-to-car, start within easy reach of the lodge, and still send you back with something for the group chat. Sorted by effort — which is to say, by how much coffee you've had.

One cup: the river walk

Out the door, five minutes to the Cowlitz, then as far along the bank as you feel like. Flat, quiet, occasionally an eagle. This is the one for arrival evenings and stiff post-drive legs.

Two cups: Packwood Lake trail (the first stretch)

The full lake is a longer day, but the first forested miles make a fine out-and-back — old growth, soft footing, and glimpses of the Goat Rocks when the trees open up. Turn around whenever the snacks run out.

Three cups: up toward Tatoosh

Steeper, rootier, and worth it. Climb until the valley unrolls behind you — on a clear day Rainier fills the northern sky and the lodge is a speck by the river. Trekking poles earn their keep on the way down.

Ask the desk for the current conditions on all five — washouts and snow lines move around up here, and our napkin maps are famously accurate.

Front desk notes

Conditions change with the seasons — check at the desk before you go. A Northwest Forest Pass covers most trailhead parking nearby; we keep a few day passes to lend.
