A first taste of the Pacific Crest Trail at White Pass
By the front desk

The Pacific Crest Trail runs 2,650 miles from Mexico to Canada, and it crosses the road seventeen miles from our parking lot. You don't need five months and a trail name to walk a piece of it — you need a day pack, a sandwich, and a reasonable start after coffee.
The out-and-back we recommend
Park at White Pass and head north into the Goat Rocks side. The trail climbs gently through forest and opens into lake country — Deer Lake and Sand Lake make natural lunch stops, far enough to feel earned, close enough to be back for dinner.
What it's actually like
September is the sweet spot: bugs gone, huckleberries out, larches starting to turn. You'll pass a few thru-hikers finishing their season — say hi, they've walked from Mexico and they're delightful and slightly feral.
Snow lingers on this stretch into July most years. Ask the desk for the current report before you commit the day.
Front desk notes
A Northwest Forest Pass covers the trailhead lot. Water is scarce on the first miles — carry what you need. The desk keeps a current snow-and-bugs report all summer.
